The Chateau Grounds Description

50 acres (17 hectares) of fields, gardens and woodlands. The medieval watchtower, a well preserved ruin with a massive arch, provides an impressive backdrop to the garden. The garden itself is planted with numerous ornamental shrubs and plants including weeping mulberry, weeping ornamental pear and its bank of lavender is awash with butterflies in summer. There is also a Stable block, lake, barns and various outbuildings including 2 swimming pools. .

Designated as a reserve, we are free from the ‘chasse’ (hunt) and so there is prolific wildlife in the woods. For those of you unfamiliar with hunting in France, except for designated reserves and those with special dispensation, the chasse has the right to hunt anywhere they like so a reserve designation enables us to protect both our privacy, safety and the abundant wildlife.

The fields have been used for grazing for our horses and the rest down to grass for hay. The wood, predominately oak, contains many fine trees. A stream and other features run through. The chateau and farmhouse sit in their gardens in the midst of the domain land of fields and woodland.

Courtyard

Enclosed gravelled courtyard, planted with traditional English roses, lavender, prunus and other plants. Traditional lead fountain (working order). The north side of the courtyard is partly bounded by the stone walls of the old threshing ground, now partly covered with rambling roses and trumpet vines. The chateau walls facing the courtyard are covered in Virginia creeper, cool leafy green in summer with fiery autumn colours.

The ‘other’ side of the house has the old stone buttresses. There was previously an old cart track running alongside the house but this is now laid to lawn bounded by fine box hedges. Rambling roses tumble down the buttresses. A characteristic French iron gate, designed and hand crafted by the local Cordes ‘ferronerie’, separates the lawn from the gravel drive.
Walled Gardens

We were delighted to uncover the orginal stone lavoir and source, and the medieval ‘watering’ system through the two walled gardens. Two tiered medieval stone walled gardens planted as an orchard (ancient pear tree, cherries, reine claude, apples) and potager. Irrigated via an ancient watering system from the pretty traditional stone source (well) and lavoir with scented climbing roses (paul’s Himalayan musk) and white wisteria.

These water sources have never, to our knowledge, run dry. In the garden is a small stone ‘bothy’ used to house the pumping system which pumps water from the lake to water the garden.

Gardens are bounded by a wooden fence and are well stocked with trees includes the ancient plane trees which shade the front of the house (ensuring it stays cool in the heat of summer). We have also bought over a number of specimen trees from England including acers, davidii (handkerchief tree), birches and others. There are a wealth of places to sit outside, including the old threshing ground, now laid to lawn, with its traditional mill stones.
Swimming Pools
The chateau swimming pool (salt) is bounded on one side by a hornbeam hedge and a lavender bed on the other. It has wonderful views looking over the fields and one can sit all day watching the buzzards soaring overhead and swallows swooping down to drink from the pool. Hoopoes and nightingales (glorious at midnight in May) are just some of the other natural delights. The farmhouse also contains its own separate swimming pool.
Stables

We have built a small stable and barn complex comprising of 3 stables and an open barn. Two years ago we put in a professionally built 50 x 25m ménage with top quality sand. Post and rail fencing.

Lake
The lake is bounded by woodland and is large, some 150m x 75m in dimension. It provides a haven for boating and fishing (it was once a trout lake but is now predominately carp). We have had experienced fishermen to stay who have not been disappointed. Waterlilies are beginning to flourish and a heron frequently visits, as well as wild duck and the wonderful golden coloured oriels in summer.
There is an old mill run in the woods leading from the lake which would make a wonderful feature if exposed but was one project too many for us!
