| The Château Property Description |
The château has been restored to the highest standards using local craftsmen and builders. It combines the best of traditional living with all the convenience of modern comforts. In our restoration we have tried to combine the best of its original stone features with one its greatest attributes, that of light filled rooms.

The chateau is entered by the 13th century tower where spiral stone stairs lead up to the landing and into the main sitting room. The sitting room (7 x 8.5 m.) has a large open fireplace and restored flagstone floors. Traditional features such as the original stone evier have been retained to give extra character to this room which works well in all seasons.
This opens on to a summer room (6 x 11m.) with windows on all four walls, in particular a magnificent arched picture window set in the traditional arched doorway which looks out over the gardens, fields and woodland. The floor is newly laid chestnut and the traditional beams have been left exposed. We had planned to make this our master bedroom but events have overtaken us! Both sitting rooms open onto the terrace which overlooks the courtyard.
The music room (4.5 x 8.5 m.), with its French windows onto the terrace has a traditional, enamel woodburning fire. A stone in its wall indicates its cathar heritage with the carving of a cathar cross. It has two original built-in cupboards. This room has in the past made a superb dining room.

The kitchen (5 x 8.5 m.) has large traditional windows with wonderful views over the valley. It has ample space for ‘living in the kitchen’. Country style units with beech surfaces and porcelain handles; beech window-seat; open marble fireplace; traditional French double oven Godin cooker. Hand made tiles above cooker and worksurfaces. It has double French doors onto the dining room / sitting room (8.5 x 8.5 m.). This magnificent room is some 5 m. in height with a feature picture window, making it very different from its days as a barn. |
However we have retained many of the original features - open beams, old but relaid terracotta tiles (plus the mod.con. of under-floor heating); retention of the original pigeonnier holes now inset with glass. Exposed stone work and plaster. Woodburning stove (Italian enamel).
The main bedrooms. Bedroom 1 (6 x 8.5 m.) has a wealth of open beams, built in cupboards and has a door leading to 2 round stone tower rooms – our folly, originally intended to be a wonderful bathroom but commandeered as a study and childrens fantasy play room respectively. Open beams spiral up to the top of the tower, whilst the pigeonnier ‘windows’ look out across the fields. Bedroom 2 (4 x 5 m.) again has both exposed stonework and original beams. Somewhat smaller, it still makes a comfortable double bedroom although it is currently our youngest daughter’s room. Bedroom 3 ( 5 x 6 m.) has built in cupboards and exposed beams. A stone window frame in the internal wall highlights that this was once an external wall and this part of the house is a later addition. This bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. The floors are all poplar, the wood traditionally used for flooring in this region of France. There is also an additional shower room and toilet

Bedrooms 4 and 5 (4 x 5 and 4 x 4 m. respectively) lead off a hallway reached by stairs from the dining/sitting room. Both have French windows opening onto the garden and are bathed in the morning sun, yet remain cool even on the hottest days. The floors are tiled and a traditional bathroom with roll top bath and arrow cross window complete this separate ‘suite’ of rooms.
Bedroom 6 (5.5 x 6.5) can be found off the tower hallway with its own private corridor (heated by an Italian enamel wood burning stove). We have retained the two original stone columns that we found in this room. It has an en-suite bathroom and separate toilet, which also currently acts as the washroom. |
The chateau has a ‘secret’ floor which has yet to be restored. It has the potential to create a further 3/4 large rooms of some 60 sq meters each. There are also the original stables which could also be converted to provide additional accommodation.
The main windows of the chateau all have shutters. Central heating is oil fuelled and radiators in all the main living rooms are of traditional style. The chateau has been restored from the roof down including re-wiring and plumbing.
